Marked Men For Christ has spent 25 years working with men who know that kind of isolation. The ministry's founders say a wounded man rarely announces that he is withdrawing. He calls it being busy. “Shame is the biggest thing they're hiding,” says co-founder Steve “Spice” Spicer. “But anger sits like a big hand on top of sadness and shame.”

Ask Spice why a man would hide those wounds even from the people closest to him, and he names the fear underneath it.

“The lie is: if I tell the truth, you're not going to love me anymore, you'll judge me, you'll turn your back on me.”

That lie can keep a man surrounded and still alone.

The hiding places have changed since Marked Men For Christ began in 2001. The wounds have not. Lager points to pornography, online gambling and the privacy of personal devices as modern ways men can escape without ever leaving the room.

“Personal devices take us into some very, very deep and dark places,” Lager says.

For 25 years, The Marked Men For Christ Ministry has gone after what is underneath the withdrawal through its 44-hour Phase 1 Experience.

The Phase 1 Experience is organized around five wounds: Deceit, Fear, Anger, Sadness and Shame. Men move through those wounds at a series of stations, doing work many have spent years avoiding. They do it in a safe place beside other men who are also being asked to stop hiding.

The fear says honesty will cost him the relationship.

Then he tells the truth.
