U.S. Navy Strikes Kill 3 Indians on Ships off Oman, India Protests
"These attacks came from the US Navy stationed in the region, as reflected in various reports and as clarified through statements made from this podium. The three ships involved in these incidents were foreign-flagged vessels," External Affairs Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal told reporters at a media briefing.
The three vessels were not Indian-owned. Two were registered under the Palau flag, while the third — struck on Thursday — flew a Guinea flag, Jaiswal confirmed.
The latest incident involved the MT Jalveer, a vessel carrying 20 Indian seafarers off Oman. All crew members aboard were reported safe. A separate attack a day earlier claimed the lives of three Indian nationals, with 21 survivors subsequently rescued. Earlier in the week, another vessel caught fire near Oman on Monday, though Indian authorities later confirmed all 24 crew members on board had escaped unharmed.
New Delhi described its diplomatic communication with Washington as a "strong" protest, pressing the U.S. side on the safety of Indian maritime workers and demanding an immediate halt to the strikes.
"We emphasized that the welfare of our seafaring community is of utmost importance and that these attacks must stop," Jaiswal said. "We further conveyed that dialogue and diplomacy are the way forward for the peaceful resolution of the conflict [with Iran], and that there should be unimpeded access through the Strait of Hormuz in accordance with international law."
