Conscious Rock Songwriter KARNEY is Ready to Take a Stand with Her New Protest Themed 'FREE COUNTRY EP'

Karney "Free Country" EP

KARNEY

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, UNITED STATES, October 1, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Anna Karney has performed across the country and released an incredible catalog of chart topping and critically acclaimed music throughout her diverse musical career. Always keeping her mind on social justice and positive messages, KARNEY delivers three new protest-themed tracks with her FREE COUNTRY EP, available October 2, 2026. With a full length album on the way in 2027, these songs are a taste of what’s to come next from the impassioned and prolific artist.

KARNEY was invited to perform her social justice songs for one of the No Kings rallies in San Francisco, which inspired her to write the song “Free Country (No Monarchs Welcome Here)” to address the topic directly. “I drew on songs I learned as a young songwriter by a group called The Congress of Racial Equality (CORE),” says Anna. “My parents had a record of their songs from the Civil Rights era of the 1960s, which inspired me to write ‘Free Country’ as a No Kings-themed protest song.” Like a tap was turned on, one new song led to KARNEY writing and recording two more. “My song ‘Anymore’ is a result of feeling lost in a place that I used to call home,” she says. “I included some uncomfortable chords and let my feelings of rage flow. But because I don’t like to stay in a dark space for too long, I decided to connect with nature in my song ‘Just for Now,’ which serves as an antidote to those dark feelings.”

The track “Free Country (No Monarchs Welcome Here)” features KARNEY on acoustic guitar and vocals together with Ben Dubin on string bass and harmonica. “Just For Now” and “Anymore” also features KARNEY on acoustic guitar and vocals and Ben Dubin on bass, together with James Deprato on guitar, Mike Anderson on bass, and Kyle Caprista on drums. All songs were recorded and co-produced by long-time collaborator Michael Rosen at East Bay Recorders.

On her last full-length album One True Song, KARNEY explored a variety of instrumental configurations and a broad range of energy. The album featured several prominent Bay Area musicians showcasing an extraordinary blend of soulful folk rock and alternative singer/songwriter acoustic arrangements. In addition to the artists featured on the FREE COUNTRY EP, the One True Song album also included guitarist Erik Smyth; bassists Kevin White (Chuck Prophet Band) and Uriah Duffy (Fantastic Negrito, Whitesnake); Phillip Bennet (Jefferson Starship) on Hammond organ and keys; violinist Anthony Blea (John Santos Sextet); and Faisal Sedan (The Qadim Ensemble) on darbuka drum, Arabic riq, and frame drum.

Following that album KARNEY also released the single “Ring In The Holidays.” With images of bells in her head (Silver Bells, Ukrainian Bells, and of course Jingle Bells, to name a few), KARNEY added a dash of The Ramones and presto! The world had a rockin’ new holiday classic.

Anna Karney’s lyrical content offers an impassioned and straightforward approach to many of the issues facing people today. Her influences include Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Patti Smith, John Lennon, Sheryl Crow, Chrissie Hynde, and Joni Mitchell. As an arranger, pianist, and guitarist, she has worked with artists such as George Clinton, Linda Perry, and Dennis Bovell.

The last KARNEY album Creatures In The Garden featured Santana band members Bill Ortiz and Karl Perazzo and was the #4 Roots Rhythm Report Top Folk Rock Album of 2024. In 2022, KARNEY released Gonna Be Beautiful, an exciting collection of originals along with some freshly conceived versions of old favorites. In 2021, songs from her EP release Better received stellar airplay on Triple-A and Americana radio stations, including the title track and her powerful cover of “Ramble On.” She released a series of singles throughout 2021, including her personal and heartfelt original “Be Together,” and a cover of the Neil Young classic “Heart of Gold.”

Other previous KARNEY releases include her 2018 album No Mercy; a series of singles from 2016 called Manifest Destiny, Vol. 1 EP and Restless Wind, Vol. 2 EP; the 2012 album Love & Respect; the 2003 album All Connected; and her debut release Karney from 1999. Anna Karney has worked with producers and artists in the SF Bay Area such as Producer/engineer Mark Pistel (Michael Franti, Grace Jones, Chuck Prophet), Producer/Engineer Michael Rosen (Rancid, Tesla, Smashmouth, Santana, and Papa Roach), and Adam Munoz (Herbie Hancock, Dave Mathews, Branford Marsalis, Joshua Bell, Chester Thompson, and Lyle Lovett).
